Signs you've got hornets.
Buzzing sound
A loud hum or steady buzz near your home could mean a nest is close by.
Aggressive behavior
Hornets get defensive fast—if they’re chasing people or pets, their nest is likely nearby.
Nests
Hornets build large paper nests under eaves, trees, or overhangs—hard to miss once they get going.
Dead insects
Hornets prey on other bugs, so finding extra dead insects around can be another sign.
Helpful tips.
1. Seal entry points
Check siding, soffits, and gaps around your roofline. Closing off small cracks helps keep hornets from building nests.
2. Avoid nest disturbance
If you spot a hornet nest, don’t swat or spray at it yourself. Disturbing a nest can trigger aggressive behavior.
3. Use traps carefully
Hornet and wasp traps can reduce activity in problem spots. Place them away from patios, decks, or play areas.
4. Keep garbage sealed
Hornets are drawn to food scraps and sweet smells. Keep outdoor trash sealed tight and move bins away from entry points.
5. Keep outdoor food/drinks covered
Open soda cans, fruit, and meats on the grill attract hornets fast. Use covers or lids whenever you’re eating outside.
6. Trim vegetation
Trim bushes, shrubs, and tree branches regularly. Overgrown vegetation gives hornets extra cover to build nests.
