Signs you've got millipedes.
Inside activity
Finding groups of millipedes crawling indoors is the clearest sign.
Strange smell
Some release a musty odor when disturbed or squished.
Damp hangouts
They love moisture—check crawlspaces, bathrooms, or spots with leaks.
Outside activity
Seeing piles of millipedes near foundations or mulch means they’re close by.
Helpful tips.
1. Seal entry points
Check doors, windows, foundation cracks, and other gaps. A little caulk or weather stripping helps keep millipedes outdoors.
2. Clean regularly
Millipedes thrive in damp, cluttered areas. Sweep, vacuum, and tidy storage spaces to cut down on the dark hiding spots.
3. Fix water leaks
Repair drips under sinks, leaky outdoor spigots, or damp spots near your foundation to keep things dry.
4. Keep garbage sealed
Trash bins collect moisture and debris that attract millipedes. Use tight-fitting lids and take garbage out often.
5. Don’t overwater lawn
Millipedes like saturated soil. Water in the early morning and avoid overwatering to reduce damp conditions.
6. Trim vegetation
Cut back shrubs, rake leaves, and clear mulch or debris. A tidy yard leaves fewer hiding places for millipedes.
