Signs you've got rats.
Droppings
Dark, pellet-shaped droppings near food, walls, or cabinets.
Strong odor
A stale, ammonia-like smell often lingers where rats are active.
Gnaw marks
Chewed wires, wood, or food packaging are a classic rat giveaway.
Scratching sounds
Scratching, squeaking, or scurrying sounds in walls or ceilings after dark.
Helpful tips.
1. Seal entry points
Inspect doors, vents, and utility lines. Seal gaps with steel wool or caulk so rats can’t chew their way in.
2. Clean regularly
Sweep floors and wipe counters often. Food crumbs and spills are prime invitations for rats.
3. Store food properly
Keep pantry goods and pet food in airtight containers. Rats have sharp noses and can sniff out even small openings.
4. Keep garbage sealed
Use bins with tight-fitting lids and take trash out often to cut down on easy meals.
5, Reduce clutter
Stacks of boxes, paper, and other clutter give rats the perfect hiding and nesting spots. Keep storage areas neat.
6. Trim vegetation
Trim back shrubs, mow grass, and clear debris piles. A tidy yard makes your home less attractive to wandering rats.
